Quick question on Flagstaff Gathering accommodations

Hi gang! I am closing in on finding us a rental home/cabin/cottagey get-away for June. I need to make a decision quickly, as they are booking up fast. But here's the dilemma: I have to go to renters individually, so it's nearly impossible to find two or more places that are close to each other. So, since our group may be relatively small this year, I am opting to look at large homes that can provide a dozen or so adults each with their own bed (or cot or pull-out couch, etc). I have found some places that can provide that, plus all the extras: television and VCR, wifi, fully equipped kitchen, reasonable rental fee, etc.

However, due to the way the Flagstaff area is set up, there is a good chance the place will be several miles away from any restaurants or grocery stores. I don't think this is a big problem as long as we have cars and a little patience. We have gotten in the habit of buying plenty of groceries and cooking lots of meals in.

So what do folks think? Is this a problem? Is anyone willing to rent a car or go in with others to pay for a rental car together? I know cactuswatcher and I will both have our own there as well.

While I'll probably fly in to cut down on transit time, I can get a car.
That would be a big help.

Yes, it is a bit of a drive from the SF Metro to Flagstaff. I have done it many times, and I'd guestimate 10-12 hours.
I think a single house for everyone is a fine idea. I doubt we'll have more than a dozen. Which means three cars would be enough as well.
There are a lot of nice places. Hoping to nab a good one.
If I'm able to come, I'd probably have different travel times from Fresne and so would probably also get a car.

Not sure when I'll know whether I can come or not--lots of various things still unsettled.
I'd fly of course and rent a car at the airport. What's the best airport?
I would suggest Phoenix Sky Harbor. It has ground transportation to Flagstaff, and the short hop by plane from Phoenix to Flagstaff probably wouldn't be worth the extra expense. Plus, it's a lovely drive up from Phx to Flag.
There's also ground transportation from the Phoenix airport to various locales in the the city of Flagstaff, for folks who aren't planning to rent a car and have arrival times that don't coincide with those that do.
For me at least, it would be much cheaper to fly into Phoenix. One other thought--is there parking for several cars at the house you're looking at?
These are homes on sprawling land, for the most part. I doubt parking will be an issue.
I remember in Tahoe we made food runs into town. Seemed to work fine, & I don't think anyone rented a car who hadn't been planning to anyway. Most of the sights people are interested in will require cars to get to in the 1st place, right?

As for me, at this point I'm not sure I'll make it after all. My cousin's daughter is getting married at the end of August in Santa Monica, & I don't know if I'll be able to afford 2 long-distance trips so close together. Hope I get enough work to cover the cost of both!
Yep, we will need cars at any rate. Wish there was a street car to the Grand Canyon, but there's not.

By renting a house and eating in, we should be able to keep the costs of this Gathering down.
That will definitely help, but there's only so much that can be done about airfares. We'll see.
There's a train that goes to the Grand Canyon.
From Flagstaff?
Even if there was, we'd still need to get everyone to the FS train station somehow. LOL.
This works fine with me.
I didn't think it would be an issue for people, but I wanted to check.
I'd certainly be happy to go in on a car rental or rent one myself.
I love the idea of us all being together in one house.
Should be fun!
If I'm able to come, and it's looking more likely, I'll have my car.

ETA: I fixed my typoing.

ETA: Kidnap ladystarlightsj on your way.
Unfortunately, the LadyS kidnapping is on my return route.
I hope you're able to go, Bit! Too bad about LadyS though.

Masq, to answer your question, I don't think I should put my name down for this year's Gathering. As much as I want to see you guys and the Grand Canyon, it's probably not a good idea with my current job(less) situation. Maybe if something changes in the next few weeks? I'm good with a sleeping bag on the floor, really :)
I hope you can come, E!
